FISH GOD
Fish God
• Fish were originally worshiped as a symbol of Nimrod, the sungod, who after being killed, was reborn in his wife Semiramus' womb. Her womb was represented as "the waters of the great deep". Nimrod then became the fish-god being reborn in these "waters."
-Oannes, the Babylonian fish-god was the return of Nimrod from the world of the dead. He is depicted as half-fish with the fish's head worn over his own.
OTHER EXAMPLES
• This stone relief is from a temple laver from Assyria found in the Pergamum Museum in East Berlin. Each priest is depicted wearing a fish-head mitre. One of the names of this God in Babylon and Philistia was Dagon (dag=fish, on=sun)
"The head of the fish formed a mitre above that of a man, while its scaly, fin-like tail fell as a cloak behind, leaving the human feet and limbs exposed." Layard's Babylon & Ninevah, p. 343

• Dagon, the sun-fish displayed in fish attire and mitre.

• Cybele, the mystery goddess of Asia Minor and Syria, wearing the mitre on her head as a representation of the fish god.

• Mitres are used universally by popes, cardinals, and bishops. The design of this hat is not the result of Catholic creativity, but does infact have mythological significance.
OTHER FISH GODS

• Isis, goddess of the Nile, in a fish incarnation. • Neptune (Poseidon), part man
and part
fish, ruler of the underworld or the sea.

• Vishnu, Hindu fish-god, symbol of the sun
rising from the sea.
