An challenging look at understanding Prophecy
The BEAST Rises
Rev 13
1. Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And
I saw a beast rising up out of the sea having 7 heads and 10 horns,
and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous
name.
2. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his
feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like
the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power,
his throne, and great authority.
3. I saw
on of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded and
his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled
and followed the beast.
4. So they worshipped the dragon who gave authority
to the beast; and they worshipped the beast saying,
"Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war
with him?"
5. And he was given a mouth speaking
great things and blasphemies, and he was granted
authority to continue for 42 months.
6. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God,
to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who
dwell in heaven.
7. And it was granted to him to
make war with the saints and to overcome them. And
authority was given him over every tribe, tongue and
nation.
8. And all who dwell on earth will worship him, whose
names have not been written in the Book of Life of the
Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
WHAT is a BEAST
Rev 16
13. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Prophecy can be summed up into god warning us not to be deceived by these 3 things. The meaning of the dragon is obvious. 12 times it is used in Revelation in reference to satan.
- The beast requires some basic understanding of prophetic symbolism. In Daniel, beasts represented worldly empires or kingdoms. This kingdom is a little different than the ones in Daniel as it composed of 10 horns which are also kingdoms. The 7 heads are kingdoms aswell, but are different than the horns as they have blasphemous names. Although the kings of ancient empires were worshiped as gods, this custom is no longer followed, so one can assume that the heads represent powerful religions.
- The false prophet, refers to the demonic deception that God permits satan to use, whichcauses the world to be deceived into worshipping the beast. This is discussed further on the 2nd Beast and Abomination of Desolation page.
WHO is the BEAST
In order to make any sense out of this we need to break down the components of the beast
The Beast connsists of:
7 heads
10 horns
The Harlot that rides the beast.
Understanding how these components are related to eachother is very important. Remember, the main thing you need to know about prophecy is that it is God`s warning to us that Satan will be allowed to rule the world politically and spiritually for a time, and that he will be granted to give power to an antichrist that will deceive the world into worhsipping his image. The punchline of revelation is therefore, Do not worhsip the image!
7 heads
The most contraversial part is certainly the heads. Politics and religion, the things the upset people the most. As meantioned, the heads have blasphemous names, and therefore must be religious powers.
pictured here is a symbol for the new world religion. note that it includes Budhism, Hinduism, Christianity, New Age, Islam, Judaism, and ofcourse Catholithism at the center. Now even though there is no way to be certain that this Symbol is ligitimate, it certainly makes a perfect fulfillment of prophecy.
Wounded Head
The key is that one of the blasphemous heads appeared to have received a deadly wound, then came back to life. History records persecution in almost every religion, but only one world religion received what could be described as an instant death. In 1798, Napoleon`s complete destruction of the Catholic empire, spiritually and politically is by far the most significant wound that any religion has ever received. And sure enough, just as the prophecy predicts, the deadly wound was healed. By the mid 1900`s, Catholithism had regained most of its previous stature, minus the power to excecute heretics.
Is the wound fully healed today? `his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast.` although the head has not returned to its full glory yet, it is fairly close. Basically not till the beast comes back to power, will the Catholic church have fully recovered to its previous state of world domination and ability to kill heretics. it was granted to him to make war with the saints
Why should we focus so much on this one wounded horn.
14. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth—by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.
A few verses later, the antrichrist is deceiveing the world into worhsipping "the beast" who`s deadly wound is healed. Do you see this transformation? Now instead of Catholic church being just one head, it is now being refered to as the beast!
Here again:
Rev 17
8. The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
In Revelation 17, the beast is the one that receives the deadly wound, not just a horn. It is clearly important to realize how significant the role of the Catholic church is
10 Horns
"are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast, " who rule over "every tribe, tongue and nation" and give "their kingdom to the beast."
This is fairly straight forward. They are not couuntries like France, America, or Iran, but kindoms or countries that do not exist yet. Common sense would dictate that they are the result of "kingdoms rising against kingdoms" and the red horse. Today we are witnessing the very beginnings of this as the European Union gains streangth, the African Union moves forward, and the North American Union has emerged as far more the outlandish conspiracy theory. How exactly the king of the north will "divide the land for gain" is not overly important. What we need to know is that these events are a part of prophecy, and that we shouldnt worry ourselved too much with political matters.
The Harlot
Described in Revelation Ch 17 as riding the beast, the transformation continues as she becomes the main focus of gGod`s warning. Described as riding the beast, one can only assume that she controls the beast. And since she represents the diabolical opposite to God`s bride, one can assume she represents the false church.
Rev 17
1. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,
2. with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication."
3. So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.
5. And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6. I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.
The harlot deceives all the kings and all those who dwell on earth to worship her, and she is called Babylon. How is it possible for the entire world to embrace ancient babylonian sun and goddess worship. For an interesting look at the similarities between world religion today and ancient babylonian sunworship, go to the Religious Iconography page.
WHEN is the BEAST and for HOW LONG
When
Clearly the events described during the reign the beast have not been fulfilled yet, therefore it is obvious that the rising of the beast will be in the future.
How Long
This point brings up some contraversy as the Daniel prophecy which predicted the rise of Catholicism in 538 A.D. followed by its apparent destruction in 1798 A.D. adds up, by no coincidence to 1260 years. Now scholars have continued to argue as to whether the times time and half a time, 42 months and 1260 day prophecies were all fulfilled, or rather were some of them refering to a literal 3 and a half year period in the future.
-Lets take a close look at the grammar of Revelation 13.
3. I saw
on of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded and
his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled
and followed the beast.
4. So they worshipped the dragon who gave authority
to the beast; and they worshipped the beast saying,
"Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war
with him?"
5. And he was given a mouth speaking
great things and blasphemies, and he was granted
authority to continue for 42 months.
Now look very closely at the underlined texts. They pinpoint exactly WHEN John the Revelator is vewing the world.
-
When did the deadly wound occur. 1798.
- Is the deadly wound healed yet. some argue yes, some say, not quite.
-
Is the whole world maveling and following after the beast right now. No.
-
Is the whole world aware that the Beast is a dominant military power. of course not.
So if John is seeing the beast at a time when it is in the future, the 42 months must also be in the future. For my fellow Adventists, this arguement boils down to one issue. In the famous book, The Great Contraversy, Ellen White describes the 42 months as occuring in the past. Here is where one must come to terms with a prophet`s human side. As Mrs. White did not claim to have been shown this by God, do you accept her personal opinion, or go with something that has more scriptural backing. For a look into how to better understand the spirit of prophecy, go to the page on the Spirit of Prophecy.
There is an interesting pattern you will notice when looking at all these time periods in Revelation. When describing God`s people it always uses 1260 days, and time times and half a time. When describing what the lost are doing, it uses 42 months.
Rev 11
1. Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, "Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there.
2. But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.
Luke 21
24. And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Both these passages are describing the same period of time. Rev 11 describes this time ending right before jesus returns, while Luke 21 describes it as after the abomination of desolation, and right before the great time of trouble.
*go to the Two Witnesses for a better look at these verses.
More evidence that the 42 months period is in the future is evident in Daniel 11 and 12.
Dan 11
33. And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering.
34. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue.
Dan 12
7. Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
The verses in Daniel 11 occur right before the resurrection and just like in luke, right after the abomination of desolation. The" many days" here is refering to the time times and half a times, of Ch 12.
CONCLUSION

Revelation Main Page
The 7 Trumpets herald the beginning of the last days. Are they literal or symbolic, past or future. You decide.
The 7 Seals of Revelation parallel the gospel prophecies of Matthew Mark and Luke.
The 7 head 10 horned beast rises to power and rules the whole world militarily and spiritually, and makes war with the saints.
The 2nd beast of Revelation exists at the same time as the 1st. Is it the antichrist or America, you decide.
The 144,000 described in Revelation have a very inspiring message for those who live through the time of the end.
Jerusalem, the highly debated city. Some say it will be the center of end time events, while others claim its merely symbolic.
The Abomination of Desolation is mentioned as happening in the early days of the new testament. Some verses point to end times.
The 2 Witnesses of Revelation. Not everything about them is revealed, but many clues are evident.
The Close of Judgment which precedes the 7 last plagues is clearly described in 2 different chapters of revelation.
Special Resurrection. Jesus returns to resurrect the saved and some of the lost.
