MODERN EXAMPLES

Big Image• The Catholic Church states that the crosier represents the shepherd's crook. This may be what it represents today, however its similarity with the staff or augur of the pontifex maximus of ancient Rome brings its origin into question. The images below are steps in the pathway of the serpent crosier that lead all the way back to Babylon.

• Although serpent symbolism in Catholocism is not prevelent, there are some curios aspects like this dragon on a large papal crest in the Vatican Museum as well as the name "Vatican" that raise questions. Vatis" = Diviner; "Can" = Serpent;
"Vatican" = The Divining Serpent.
